Memorial Day 2018 Fun

Posted on

We headed far north for Memorial Day Weekend. We were so excited to take the Maverick to the UP and play outside there. Our destination was somewhere around Pine Stump/Grand Marais but we didn’t have any reservations. We headed up Thursday night and stayed at Hartwick Pines State Park in Grayling so we would be a few hours north and could get to the UP in the early afternoon/late morning on Friday to make sure we would get a camping site somewhere. Muskallonge Lake State Park only had a few sites available so we were pretty sure there would be quite a few people already in the campgrounds we like.

Well – we were wrong. We first drove into High Bridge State Forest Campground to find it was almost empty. None of the sites there looked perfect so we headed down the road a mile to Perch Lake State Forest Campground. Bingo – it was almost empty and a beautiful place. There was one site occupied and it was on an end of the campground we did not like. We started to get set up and noticed that we were being inundated with dozens – no hundreds and hundreds of small bugs. Our new favorite camping accessory was a head net and we rarely had them off all weekend!

We had so much fun despite the bugs and we made the most of it. We rode about 100 miles on the Mav and visited Pine Stump Junction – one of our favorite places ever, Wolf Inn, Lake Superior Brewing Company in Grand Marais, Crisp Point and miles and miles of fun trails to get to all those places.

Love the Sarver wine at Lake Superior Brewing Company

Pine Stump Junction always has the coldest beer.

Yep – no one around anywhere!

Site 16 was definitely one of the best in the whole campground.

We BOTH looked so good in our headsets.

That’s how you look after driving around with Scott!

It was a GORGEOUS weather. Lake Superior looked so inviting but 45 degree weather was a big chilly for swimming.

Grand Marais Lighthouse.

Little Lake Harbor in the fog

Perfect trails.

Crisp Point was beautiful in the fog.

The other side of Crisp Point Lighthouse.

The sign says it all.

Not an “official” trail. It got too narrow so we had to turn around.

A “little” wet in some spots!

Doesn’t get much better than this.

This view never got old.

The fire somewhat helped with the bugs!

Our last night was just gorgeous – of course!

So sad to say goodbye to our beautiful view – bugs and all!
